How To Hold a Chiropractic Adjustment Longer

Chiropractic adjustment is a manipulation of the spine to treat and improve the joints by restoring their proper motion.  The procedure is gentle and controlled to direct pressure to the spine in order to relieve the nerve from obstruction.  The realignment retrains the muscles to help hold the spine in the correct position.

This process needs to be conducted over several sessions to take effect.  The number of required sessions depends on the amount of blockage that needs to be corrected.  With proper maintenance of chiropractic adjustment, you will have a faster road to full recovery.

If you have recently undergone a chiropractic adjustment, or if you are about to undergo one, below are some guidelines to help you maintain the alignment of your spine.

  • Attend all of your scheduled appointments with your doctor. A major mistake that chiropractic patients make is to take a session for granted and skip it.  It is imperative that you keep your appointments and arrive on time.  The frequency of your sessions is prescribed by your doctor for a reason, especially if you need a more aggressive treatment plan.
  • Do your homework. Chiropractors usually ask patients to do exercises at home.  Sounds like a lot of work especially if you are not a fan of working out.  However odd the exercise program may seem, these exercises are designed to support the chiropractic adjustment performed on you and keep hold of your different muscle groups to respond faster.  Make time to regularly do the exercises your doctor has prescribed.
  • Refrain from doing the activities that triggered or caused your spine problem. Now this can be challenging, as the cause or trigger may be a habitual action that you do unconsciously.  For instance, slumping on your seat while on class, watching TV, or playing computer games do not help with spine alignment.  Be more conscious of your actions and posture.
  • Be more active.  Surprisingly, most chiropractors find that a more active chiropractic patient seems to have a healthier life with faster response to the treatment.  Activities like jogging, swimming, or even regular exercises stimulate the joints and muscles.  The stretching of the muscles when doing certain motions helps improve the spine alignment.  As you become more active, it is possible that you will need fewer visits to your chiropractor due to the rapid improvement in your body.
  • Take some time to relax.  Try to relax as stress can add tension to your body, particularly your muscles.  Tension causes your muscles to tighten and can pull the skeletal structure out of alignment.  This can end up bringing the pain back.  Your past sessions of chiropractic adjustment may be wasted if you keep being stressed.  Breathe, try to relax, and take things slowly.
  • Listen to what your body tells you. No one knows your body better than you do, not even your chiropractor.  Though they are trained professionals with years and years of experience, take time to listen to your body and get a feel if something is amiss.

Prevention is still better than cure.  It might sound cliché, but it’s true.  Be more cautious of your actions and activities so you to limit the need for chiropractic adjustment in the first place.
